There probably aren’t many lawyers left who don’t engage in social media of one form or another, whether it be Linkedin, Facebook, Twitter, or the newest app to hit the market.
I thought it might be helpful to provide a post on possible pitfalls lawyers may encounter on social media.
The American Bar Association published a good article on the topic a couple of years ago. In “10 Tips for Avoiding Ethical Lapses When Using Social Media”, provide a good overview of the issues lawyers should consider.
Some are obvious, like “Do not disclose privileged or confidential information.” Others, such as, “Beware of Inadvertently Creating Attorney-Client Relationships” and “Social Media Profiles and Posts May Constitute Legal Advertising”, are less so.
I recommend taking a look at the article and reviewing your jurisdiction’s rules and opinions on the subject.
