Law firm Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz is unrolling a pilot program that seeks to track the location and status of each of its attorneys. The purported reason for the new program: “The lack of awareness of the status and/or location of our colleagues results in staffing and work-related complications and other concerns.”
While I understand the issues surrounding management of cases, deadlines, and staffing, I’m not sure real-time tracking of attorneys is the answer. This approach says “we don’t trust you.” If you don’t trust your colleagues, then maybe you should find colleagues you can trust.
I predict heavy push back from the firm’s lawyers. It will be interesting to see if this sticks or is implemented at other law firms.
